I recently watched two TED Talks on Education. First, I watched John Legend: “True Colors”. I chose to watch this performance because it shows that we can find education in popular culture as well as giving a new perspective to how we can learn about education.
In this performance, John Legend sings and plays his song “True Colors” but this performance has emphasis on teachers and students. The lyrics “Don’t be afraid, to let them show. True Colors are beautiful like a rainbow” really resonated with me because it encourages diversity and differences in us. Each teacher and student need to express their ‘true colors’ and by doing so they will thrive whether they are teaching or being taught. I feel as though many students are afraid to express their thoughts and opinions if they don’t seem like the norm. By encouraging students to express themselves, we can help them grow into successful, independent adults. Teachers should also teach with their true passion and expression to help the students reach their full potential.

The second TED Talk on Education that I watched was Rita Pierson: Every kid needs a champion. Rita Pierson was been a teacher all of her adult life. She talked about the importance of a positive relationship between a teacher and their students. A good relationship between a student and their teacher can help the student further their education and help the teacher further their educating skills and career.
A point that really resonated with me from this talk is when Rita talked about apologizing to the students if necessary. Sometimes it is easy to get caught up with being in charge of the classroom. But, everybody makes mistakes and the kids deserve an apology if the teacher makes a mistake. It also puts the students and teachers on a more even level, which can encourage more interaction from the students. I think it is all too common for teachers to put themselves on a pedestal in the front of their classrooms. This can make it intimidating for kids to ask questions or point out certain things. It’s important for the kids to feel comfortable in the classroom and with the teacher.

I think it can be very beneficial to use TED talks in the classroom. TED Ed is providing lesson plans that are making it easy to take them into your classroom. I found one lesson plan very interesting on the use of commas. You can view the lesson plan here.
I really liked this lesson plan because it very clearly describes what a comma is, as well as other literary terms such as conjunction and subordinate. It doesn’t dumb down the topic, but it illustrates very clearly and clears up any confusion. This lesson plan also includes some questions to ensure competence as well as links to helpful resources and forums. It really is an all-in-one tool that can help out teachers, and in turn, students!
